House Votes to End U.S. War Against Iran; Senate Eyes Immigration Enforcement

WASHINGTON (AP) — The House of Representatives approved a war powers resolution on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, to halt U.S. military action against Iran, marking a significant bipartisan rebuke of President Donald Trump as the three-month-long conflict continues to reshape domestic and international politics.

The vote was 215-208, with cheers erupting in the House chamber after Speaker Mike Johnson had previously stalled the measure two weeks ago when it neared approval. Displeasure with the war has grown as it drags on and Trump struggles to negotiate a resolution.

House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries of New York called the conflict a "reckless and costly war of choice" that has cost American taxpayers over $100 billion and weakened the U.S. position relative to Iran.

This is the fourth time the House has attempted to curb the war, but the first successful passage. The Senate advanced its own war powers resolution last month with support from a handful of Republican senators breaking ranks with Trump.

The war, which began with U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28, has led to gas price spikes and inflationary pressures. Iran has disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical channel for global oil and natural gas.

A ceasefire declared in April remains fragile, and talks for a durable end are complicated by Israel's expanding conflict with Hezbollah in Lebanon. Military strikes between the U.S.

and Iran continue intermittently.

The House resolution is symbolic and legal, aiming to restrict further military action. It now goes to the Senate, where four Republicans previously joined Democrats to advance a similar measure.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned that approval would signal to Iran that the administration's hands are tied, potentially undermining negotiations.

In related actions, the House is also voting on a Democratic-led measure to authorize U.S. support for Ukraine's military operations and reconstruction, and is expected to consider a war powers resolution to block U.S.

action in Lebanon. The constitutional dispute over war powers continues, with the White House arguing that the ceasefire has ended hostilities, thus resetting the 60-day window under the War Powers Act.
