House defies Trump, passes war powers resolution to stop military action against Iran

The House of Representatives voted on Wednesday to pass a war powers resolution aimed at halting U.S. military action against Iran, delivering a significant bipartisan rebuke to President Donald Trump's handling of the ongoing conflict.

The roll call vote was 215-208, with the measure receiving support from nearly all Democrats and a handful of Republicans. The vote marked a major challenge to the administration's strategy in the region, as the conflict has now entered its third month, reshaping domestic politics and international relations.

House Speaker Mike Johnson had previously delayed consideration of the resolution, abruptly halting floor action two weeks earlier when it appeared poised to pass. However, opposition to the war continued to grow as fighting persisted and diplomatic efforts failed to produce a swift resolution.

House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries of New York said the conflict has cost American taxpayers more than $100 billion and weakened the nation's strategic position in the region. He urged Republicans to support the resolution, saying bipartisan backing was necessary to bring the military campaign to a close.

The resolution now heads to the Senate, where its fate remains uncertain.
