Garden Grove to Compile ‘After Action’ Report Amid Resident Outrage Over Chemical Crisis

Garden Grove, incident, politics, health

Garden Grove officials faced a wave of public fury during a community meeting on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, as residents demanded answers and accountability following a chemical crisis at the GKN Aerospace plant that forced the evacuation of 50,000 people over Memorial Day weekend. The meeting, held at the Community Meeting Center, was cut short after tensions escalated into shouting matches, prompting police to clear the chambers.

No arrests were made.

During the meeting, officials announced that all remaining evacuation orders had been lifted, as the faulty tank at GKN Aerospace on Western Avenue no longer posed a threat of toxic blast, chemical leak, or public danger. However, the announcement did little to quell the anger of the crowd, many of whom held signs reading “Arms Embargo, GKN Out of Garden Grove.”

Councilmember Brietigam stated that the city is compiling an “after action” report to address “a lot of things that could have been done much better,” though no timeline for its completion was provided. The report is expected to cover shelter conditions and capacity—several shelters were maxed out—and ways to improve evacuations, particularly for elderly residents.

Brietigam also mentioned exploring partnerships with local service clubs and hoteliers for future emergencies.

Resident Lauriana Adriano described the evacuation as “truly heartbreaking,” noting that people left behind essential medications, pet food, and daily necessities with no communication about when they could return. Many evacuees slept in cars outside shelters that were overwhelmed, with some shelters offering only 200 beds.

Adriano criticized the city for not utilizing empty housing units and allowing hotels to charge emergency rates.

Lifelong resident Nathan Tran told officials, “A military plant has no place across the street from an elementary school. The city has a duty to its community and must hold manufacturers like GKN accountable.”

GKN Aerospace issued a statement expressing gratitude to emergency crews and apologizing for the disruption, pledging to work with local officials and nonprofits on relief efforts.

On Wednesday, Orange County Fire Authority Interim Fire Chief TJ McGovern reported that conditions at the tank remained stable, with monitoring continuing within a 300-foot zone. He noted that the product inside the tank is solidifying, and OCFA will soon hand over lead responsibilities to the EPA and OC Health Care Agency for remediation and recovery.

City leaders are also seeking financial relief for affected residents and businesses. Brietigam emphasized the need for GKN to set up a reimbursement website, while the city is pursuing a U.S.

Small Business Administration Economic Injury Disaster Loan declaration to support impacted businesses and nonprofits.
