Father and Son Charged in Oakland Swap Meet Homicide

A father and his son have been charged in connection with a fatal shooting at an Oakland swap meet, where police say the victims were rival vendors selling counterfeit identification documents. The incident occurred on May 28, 2026, at the Coliseum Swap Meet, a popular weekend market in the city.

According to court documents, the suspects, identified as 54-year-old Marcus Johnson and his 22-year-old son, Tyler Johnson, allegedly opened fire on a group of individuals who were also peddling fake IDs at the same venue. The shooting left one man dead and two others injured.

Oakland Police Department spokesperson Sgt. Johnna Watson stated that the altercation began as a dispute over territory and customer base.

"This was not a random act of violence; it was a targeted attack between competing illegal vendors," Watson said. The Johnsons were arrested at their home in Hayward on May 30 and are being held without bail.

They face charges of murder, attempted murder, and illegal possession of firearms. The deceased has been identified as 38-year-old Carlos Mendez of San Leandro.

The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward.
