Ex-San Diego Sheriff’s Deputy Gets 12 Years for Fatal Shooting of Fleeing Man

A former San Diego County sheriff’s deputy was sentenced Friday to 12 years in state prison for shooting a fleeing man in the back outside a county jail. The incident occurred in 2023 when the deputy, who was off-duty at the time, confronted the victim near the jail facility.

The victim, who was unarmed, was attempting to flee when the deputy fired a single shot, striking him in the back. The man later died from his injuries.

The deputy was convicted of voluntary manslaughter and assault with a firearm. During sentencing, the judge cited the deputy’s abuse of authority and the unnecessary use of deadly force.
