The United States launched a series of airstrikes against Iranian military targets on Monday, bombing radar and drone sites in Iran after Tehran shot down an American drone over the weekend. No casualties were reported among U.S. personnel, according to initial reports from the Department of Defense.

The escalation marks a significant uptick in tensions between the two nations, which have been locked in a shadow war for years. The downing of the U.S.

drone on Saturday was the latest in a series of incidents that have pushed the region closer to open conflict.

President Joe Biden convened an emergency meeting of the National Security Council on Sunday to discuss options. The airstrikes, carried out by B-52 bombers and fighter jets, were authorized after intelligence confirmed that the Iranian drone that was shot down was armed and conducting reconnaissance over international waters near the Strait of Hormuz.

Iranian state media condemned the U.S. strikes as a violation of its sovereignty and warned of further retaliation.

The United Nations called for restraint from both sides, urging de-escalation to prevent a broader war in the Middle East.

The situation remains fluid, with U.S. forces in the region on high alert. The Pentagon has ordered additional naval assets to the Persian Gulf to protect American interests and allies.
