Lala Huo faced two challenges: finding Chinese-language books in the Bay Area and securing a consistent venue for community events. His solution is Unbound, a bookstore, coffee bar, and community living room at 38 Waverly Pl.
in San Francisco’s Chinatown. The shop, which quietly opened in December 2025, will celebrate its grand opening at the end of June.
Huo, 30, came to the U.S. for school in 2010 and struggled to find Chinese books, often stocking up during trips to China or ordering online.
He also organized events for the Chinese community but found venues difficult to book: public libraries required months of advance notice, and private spaces were costly. Unbound is designed as a for-profit LLC with revenue from books, coffee, and crafts by local Asian artists.
It offers a curated mix of titles from independent U.S. publishers and from China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong.
The store hosts weekly events, including a silent book club, used-book exchanges, movie nights, and author talks. The grand opening will feature a timeline of Chinese immigration to San Francisco, firecrackers, and other traditional rituals.
Huo says the goal is to serve the local Chinese community with a down-to-earth approach.
