On June 12, 2026, at approximately 7:36 a.m., San Francisco Police Department officers responded to a reported theft at the Trader Joe's located at the intersection of California and Hyde Streets. Upon arrival, officers attempted to detain the suspect, who resisted and fled on foot.
Two officers pursued the suspect into the street, where all three individuals were struck by a passing vehicle. One officer became pinned beneath the vehicle.
Firefighters worked to free the officer while paramedics provided emergency medical care. All three victims were transported to a local hospital.
Despite life-saving efforts, the theft suspect succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased. The two officers are being treated for non-life-threatening injuries and are expected to recover.
