The San Francisco Recreation and Park Commission unanimously voted Thursday to approve the final design for the $40 million waterfront park. The 5-acre space at the foot of Market Street will include a large central lawn, playground, community gathering space, and outdoor dining area. The project is supported by $20 million in private funding from philanthropic nonprofit Crankstart and the San Francisco Downtown Development Corporation, and $18 million from public sources. The Recreation and Park Department will oversee construction, breaking ground in late 2026, and long-term upkeep. Supervisor Danny Sauter introduced legislation for the city to accept up to $20 million in private funding. The final design reflects over a year of community engagement through public meetings and surveys. The project also plans to integrate "historic interpretation elements" showcasing the Embarcadero's evolution, including the original plaza with the Vaillancourt Fountain and the Embarcadero Freeway.

According to an official announcement, the expansive space will host festivals, concerts, picnic areas, and gardens, transforming the plaza into a vibrant community hub.

The approval marks a significant step in the city's ongoing efforts to enhance public access to the waterfront and promote outdoor recreational activities.
