Rancho Palos Verdes will celebrate both the nation’s 250th anniversary and California’s 175th birthday during its annual Fourth of July drone show, scheduled for July 4 from 3 to 9 p.m. at the Ken Dyda Civic Center, located at 30940 Hawthorne Boulevard.

The free community event will culminate in a 15-minute patriotic display featuring 150 drones.

Recreation program coordinator Simy Soto expressed excitement about the show but declined to reveal too many details. “I don’t want to say too much to give away the show,” Soto said.

“I want people to come out and attend, and see all the hard work that’s been put into the drone show.”

The celebration will include live country music from Boomer McLennan and the Rhythm Rangers, line dancing, and a performance by the Palos Verdes Symphonic Band from 3:15 to 4:15 p.m. A beer and wine booth, food booths and trucks, craft vendors, and family-friendly activities such as inflatables, face painting, a hula-hoop contest, and a watermelon roll will be available throughout the afternoon.

A highlight of the day will be the pie-eating contest at 4:30 p.m., featuring returning champion and Councilmember Steve Perestam facing off against past champion and Councilmember David Bradley. Former Councilmember John Cruikshank won the first three contests from 2021 to 2023, before Bradley took the crown in 2024.

Perestam won last year.

Parking will be available on site for $10, cash only. Attendees can also park for free at the Point Vicente Interpretive Center, 31501 Palos Verdes Drive West, and take a complimentary shuttle to the celebration.
