Orange police are investigating a deadly incident that occurred late Saturday, June 13, in the 600 block of South Fashion Park Street. Authorities say 28-year-old Abrahan Perez was involved in a fight with neighbors just before 10:30 p.m.
The cause of the altercation remains unknown. After the fight, Perez briefly left the scene in a car but returned a short time later, drove up a curb, and struck 54-year-old Juan Mojica Cuevas of Orange.
The Toyota sedan continued and partially entered an apartment building, according to footage from OC Hawk, a freelance news organization. Cuevas was taken to a hospital, where he died from his injuries.
Public records show that Perez and Cuevas lived in adjacent apartment buildings at the intersection of Fashion Park Street and Fairway Drive. Perez was arrested on suspicion of murder and remained in custody as of Tuesday.
A GoFundMe page set up to support Cuevas's wife and cover funeral expenses describes him as "the definition of kindness" and a "genuine, helpful soul." Family members wrote that on the night of the killing, Cuevas was “trying to keep his children from danger” but lived with a disability that made it difficult to move quickly, preventing him from escaping harm. Cuevas leaves behind his wife, six children, and two grandchildren, and was the family's sole provider.
The fundraiser, seeking $11,000, had raised over $9,000 as of Tuesday morning.
