A devastating crash early Friday morning claimed one life and left four others injured after a vehicle flew off an overpass in San Francisco, landing upside down and bursting into flames. The incident occurred just after midnight, around 12:20 a.m., in the area between the Dogpatch and Potrero Hill neighborhoods.
According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the car went off the 18th Street overpass and crashed onto southbound Interstate 280 near Mariposa Street. The vehicle became engulfed in flames upon impact, trapping one person inside while four others managed to escape.
Emergency responders arrived to find the car overturned and burning. The trapped individual was pronounced dead at the scene.
The four survivors were transported to San Francisco General Hospital, where they are recovering from their injuries. The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the CHP.
The southbound lanes of I-280 were closed for several hours as crews worked to clear the wreckage and investigate the scene. The highway reopened around 7 a.m.
Friday. Authorities have not released the identities of the deceased or the injured pending notification of next of kin.
