A Santa Clara County Superior Court judge denied bail on Friday for Yanette Beas Solorio, 35, of Arbuckle, who is charged with murder in the death of Haregewaine Mitiku Ayalew, a 55-year-old Santa Clara resident and revered Ethiopian community leader. Judge Hector Ramon rejected the defense's request to release Beas Solorio to a residential treatment facility, citing the severity and nature of the incident.

Deputy Public Defender Fatima Ortiz argued for supervised release, noting Beas Solorio's lack of prior criminal history, her participation in jail programming, and her status as a model inmate. Ortiz urged the court not to define her client by "the absolutely worst day of her life" and claimed she posed no future threat.

However, Adene Kassaye, Ayalew's daughter and a witness to the crash, testified against release. She described how the family's Jeep was struck by Beas Solorio's BMW on South Winchester Boulevard and Tisch Way on Nov.

30. After both women exited to inspect damage, Beas Solorio allegedly lurched the car forward, hitting Ayalew's torso.

Ayalew slammed the hood and yelled, but Beas Solorio accelerated, dragging Ayalew before driving over her. Kassaye held her mother as she died from brain trauma, cardiac arrest, and respiratory failure.

Beas Solorio fled the scene without providing aid.

Police later found that Beas Solorio had hit a red Tesla in a Santana Row parking lot about 15 minutes before the fatal crash. After fleeing, she was followed by a motorist who blocked her path; she rammed his Toyota Yaris out of the way.

Officers who arrested her noted bloodshot eyes, unsteady gait, slurred speech, and the odor of alcohol. She was described as "resistive at the scene."

Judge Ramon rejected the defense's characterization, calling the episode "much more than just a driving under the influence case with a bad outcome" and noting "human agency involved." He concluded that releasing Beas Solorio would pose a substantial risk of great bodily harm to the community.

Ayalew, known as a "Mother of the Poor," was widely mourned. She worked as a home care aide, ran the San Pedro Gift Shop in downtown San Jose, and founded a dormitory and library at Debre Birhan Selassie Church in Gondar, Ethiopia.

Over 1,000 people attended her memorial, including San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan and U.S. Rep.
