Early Red Flag Warnings Signal Elevated Wildfire Risk Across California

Fresno, weather, fire, safety

California's wildfire season is starting earlier than usual this year, with red flag warnings already appearing across parts of the state in May due to warm, dry weather and above-normal fire activity. The National Weather Service issued its first red flag warning in mid-May for Kern, Tulare, Fresno, and Merced counties.

A red flag warning indicates that warm temperatures, very low humidity, and strong winds create a high risk for fire ignition and rapid spread. While a red flag warning does not mean a wildfire is currently burning, it signals that conditions are dangerous enough for a fire to start easily and spread quickly.

Fire danger is increasing earlier than typical this year because of warm, dry weather and early fuel drying, according to fire officials and national outlooks. These conditions are expected to expand wildfire risk across California heading into summer, especially during wind events that can quickly push flames across dry grass and brush.

Cal Fire, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, maintains a wildfire threat and intelligence integration center (WFTIIC) that continuously monitors NWS alerts, current fuel model conditions, and regional conditions. Fire officials urge residents to prepare well before any warning is issued.

"Preparation starts long before there's any sort of wind or fire threat," said David Acuña, a Cal Fire battalion chief and public information officer. During red flag warnings, people should avoid activities that can create sparks, such as mowing or using outdoor power equipment.

"We generally say mow before 10 a.m., but during a red flag warning, we say don't mow at all," Acuña said. Low humidity and strong winds can allow a fire to spread as if it were the hottest part of the day, even in the morning hours.

Other common wildfire starts come from everyday activities, including welding or metal work, dragging trailer chains, and vehicles in poor repair that can emit hot debris. Officials recommend fully extinguishing campfires by dousing with water and stirring until cold, ensuring trailer chains are not dragging on the road, and keeping vehicles in good repair.

Even a single spark can quickly grow into a dangerous fire under red flag conditions, Acuña warned. The Cal Fire website provides real-time information on current fires, including those over 10 acres, and officials say it is a reliable one-stop source for updates.

Residents can track fires, evacuation orders, and road closures at the Cal Fire incidents map and monitor local alerts as conditions change.
