A man who appeared to have suffered a gunshot wound died Tuesday following a two-vehicle collision near March Air Reserve Base in Riverside County, authorities said. The victim was identified as an employee of the American Forces Network, the base confirmed.
The government television and radio broadcast service worker was driving to work at the time of the 8 a.m. crash near the intersection of 2nd and Z streets, according to the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.
The location is not on the base itself, which is situated about 60 miles east of Los Angeles. The collision involved an SUV and a sedan.
Deputies initially responded to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon. California Highway Patrol officers informed deputies that both drivers were taken to hospitals in critical condition.
"It was later determined that the subject had injuries consistent with a gunshot wound," the sheriff's department said in a statement. "The Moreno Valley Investigation Bureau assumed the investigation.
No further details are available as the investigation remains ongoing." Details about what led to the shooting were not immediately available. The incident disrupted traffic in the area for several hours as investigators worked to piece together the events.
The American Forces Network provides news and entertainment to U.S. military personnel and their families around the world.
The identity of the deceased has not been publicly released pending notification of next of kin.
