Community spirit took center stage this week as residents and law enforcement gathered at Kuffel Canyon Coffee in Skyforest for a special "Coffee with a Cop" event. The initiative underscored the growing bond between local citizens and safety officials in the San Bernardino County mountains.
About two dozen attendees, including deputies and curious passersby, visited the newly opened cafe at 29632 Sycamore Drive from 9 to 10 a.m. The gathering offered fresh coffee, lattes, and pastries alongside informal conversations between the public and police officers.
"They’re here to support us and they have given us a warm welcome," said owner-operator Joe Timoner regarding the influx of visitors.
Timoner, a member of the Lake Arrowhead Communities Chamber of Commerce, noted that his business has thrived despite a three-and-a-half-year delay caused by permitting requirements. He emphasized that word-of-mouth communication played a crucial role in establishing the venture successfully within the first ninety days.
While enjoying the coffee, attendees learned about upcoming community safety initiatives. CHP Public Information Officer Jacob Griede announced a yearly Trunk-A-Treat Open House and Car Show scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 24, at the CHP’s Arrowhead Area Station. The family-friendly event welcomes classic car enthusiasts of all ages.
Twin Peaks Sheriff’s Station Commander Capt. Craig Harris also reminded the public of the recent Sheriff’s Rodeo held in Devore earlier in September. On the crime front, Deputy Sandoval highlighted ongoing investigations into vandalism and assault in the Lake Gregory residential area. Deputies continue to search for a suspect linked to these incidents.
The Skyforest and Twin Peaks areas have seen increased foot traffic and community gatherings lately, reflecting a broader trend of revitalization in the San Bernardino County mountains. Local businesses are relying heavily on neighborly support to recover from bureaucratic hurdles and economic challenges.
"Coffee with a Cop" programs originated decades ago as a strategy to humanize law enforcement and foster trust in neighborhoods. These informal meetups allow officers to discuss concerns directly with residents in relaxed settings, often reducing tensions and improving cooperation.
As Kuffel Canyon Coffee continues to grow, its partnership with local agencies serves as a model for future community outreach. Residents are encouraged to attend upcoming events like the Trunk-A-Treat car show to strengthen ties with public safety officials while supporting local mountain commerce.
