40-Acre Brush Fire in Sorrento Valley Prompts Evacuations and Road Closures

A fast-moving brush fire erupted in San Diego's Sorrento Valley on Monday morning, scorching between 30 and 40 acres and prompting immediate evacuation orders for nearby residents. The blaze was first reported around 9:20 a.m.

near the intersection of Vista Sorrento Parkway and Sorrento Valley Boulevard, just east of Interstate 805, according to fire officials.

San Diego Fire-Rescue crews responded swiftly, but the fire spread at a "dangerous rate of speed," threatening structures in its path. By 9:50 a.m., the fire had burned at least three acres, and within an hour, it had grown to an estimated 30 to 40 acres.

Aerial support was requested to assist ground crews in containing the flames.

The San Diego Police Department issued evacuation orders for the 10500 blocks of Sand Crab Place and Corte Jardin Del Mar, warning that additional evacuations might be necessary. A temporary evacuation point was established at Mandell Weiss Eastgate Park to accommodate displaced residents.

Sorrento Valley Boulevard was completely closed between Vista Sorrento Parkway and Camino Santa Fe, causing significant traffic disruptions in the area. Motorists were advised to avoid the region and seek alternate routes.

The fire's proximity to Interstate 5 added to the urgency, as officials monitored wind conditions and the fire's trajectory.

As of late morning, no injuries had been reported, and the cause of the fire remained under investigation. Firefighters continued to battle the blaze, focusing on protecting structures and preventing further spread.
