Two Dead, Oakland Police Officer Injured in High-Speed Crash Involving Stolen SUV

Oakland, crime, traffic, accident

A high-speed crash in East Oakland on Monday morning left two people dead and an Oakland police officer injured, according to authorities. The incident occurred around 11:10 a.m.

near East 12th Street and 29th Avenue, when a stolen Chevrolet Tahoe SUV, driving recklessly, collided with an Oakland Police Department SUV that was on routine patrol.

The chain of events began when an Oakland Housing Authority police officer spotted the SUV speeding and driving erratically on East 12th Street. The officer activated his emergency lights to initiate a traffic stop, but the suspect vehicle fled at high speed.

In accordance with OHAPD policy, the officer discontinued the pursuit and turned off his lights.

Moments later, the stolen SUV, still speeding, crashed into the OPD patrol vehicle. The officers inside the OPD SUV were not involved in the pursuit and were simply patrolling the area.

The stolen SUV continued for about a quarter block before flipping over and landing on its side, ejecting two occupants.

Both ejected men were pronounced dead at the scene. One victim landed on the center median beneath elevated BART tracks, while the other came to rest on the pavement in front of the crashed SUV.

The driver of the stolen vehicle attempted to flee on foot but was apprehended by the OHAPD officer who had initially spotted the speeding SUV. It remains unclear whether the driver required hospitalization.

The injured Oakland police officer was transported to a hospital; their condition is not yet known. The crash investigation has shut down East 12th Street in both directions between 25th and 30th avenues.

Authorities continue to investigate the incident.
