A suspect is in custody following a deadly shooting in Pomona and a subsequent 90-minute chase by California Highway Patrol officers. The incident unfolded Thursday afternoon when Pomona police responded to reports of shots fired at an apartment complex around 3:20 p.m.
Officers discovered a man and a woman suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite life-saving efforts by the Los Angeles County Fire Department, both victims died at the scene.
The victims have been identified by their families as 24-year-old Veronica Lopez, a former professional skateboarder and avid San Francisco 49ers fan, and 48-year-old Richard Brady, her neighbor. Authorities have not yet officially confirmed their names.
Police allege that 48-year-old Robert Galtman, who lived in the same building and had been Lopez's boyfriend for the past two years, is responsible for the killings.
Later that day, officers attempted to pull Galtman over, which led to a lengthy pursuit. Footage from the chase shows Galtman throwing objects from his car and dodging spike strips before finally surrendering around 5 p.m.
He is currently being held on $3 million bail and is expected to be arraigned on Tuesday.
Lopez's sister, Klarissa Lopez, has established a GoFundMe fundraiser to help cover funeral costs. Speaking with CBS News, she mourned her younger sibling, stating, "I know she didn't deserve to get murdered.
She's an innocent young girl; a grown man murdered my sister." Lopez was known for her love of the San Francisco 49ers, often seen in red-and-gold gear on social media.
Richard Brady's older brother also spoke with CBS, remembering him as someone who "stuck up for those who couldn’t stick up for themselves." A separate GoFundMe has been set up for Brady's two children. The community mourns the loss of both victims as the legal process moves forward.
