A serious crash in Butte County on Friday evening sent seven people to the hospital after a car veered off the road and plunged into a canal. The incident occurred just before 6 p.m.

on Highway 99 near the town of Biggs, prompting a swift response from emergency services. According to the California Highway Patrol, the vehicle was traveling northbound when it lost control, struck a guardrail, and became submerged in the adjacent agricultural canal.

Rescue crews, including divers and firefighters, worked quickly to extract all occupants from the water. Seven individuals were transported to local hospitals with injuries ranging from minor to moderate.

CHP officials are investigating the cause of the crash, with early indications pointing to possible excessive speed. The canal, which is used for irrigation, was not flowing at a high rate, which likely prevented more severe injuries.

The roadway was closed for several hours as crews cleared the scene and conducted the investigation. All lanes have since reopened.

Authorities urge drivers to remain cautious, especially on rural highways where canals and waterways are common alongside the road.
