San Francisco Police Officer and Suspect Critically Injured in Shooting After Chase

A San Francisco police officer and a suspect are in critical condition after exchanging gunfire Sunday night following a car chase, authorities said. The incident began around 10:30 p.m.

when police were alerted to a vehicle suspected in a robbery entering the city from the Bay Bridge. Officers located the vehicle traveling on 5th Street near Folsom Street and attempted to stop it at Mission and First streets.

The driver fled, leading police on a pursuit through city streets until the vehicle became disabled in the area of Bayshore Boulevard and Jerrold Avenue. As officers approached, the driver opened fire, striking an officer multiple times.

At least one officer returned fire, hitting the suspect. The San Francisco Police Officers Association stated the officer is expected to survive despite life-threatening injuries.

The suspect also sustained life-threatening injuries. A passenger who fled the vehicle was later arrested near Bayshore Boulevard and Costa Street.

The investigation is ongoing.
