San Diego Teen Fatally Shot; Baby Dies After Emergency C-Section

Canyon, San Diego, crime, domestic violence, shooting

A tragic incident in San Diego has claimed the lives of a 17-year-old mother and her newborn daughter. Jariah Edwards, who was approximately 32 weeks pregnant, was fatally shot in the head on May 30 outside a short-term vacation rental in the Bay Park neighborhood.

The teen and her family were visiting San Diego from Arizona when the shooting occurred. San Diego police reported that the baby girl, delivered by emergency cesarean section after her mother was shot, died Sunday at a hospital.

Authorities arrested 21-year-old Trevon Williams, who prosecutors say is the father of the baby. Williams allegedly ordered a Lyft ride from his home in Arizona to the rental property where Edwards was staying with her family.

He is accused of luring her outside and shooting her in the head. Paramedics rushed Edwards to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead and her baby was delivered via emergency C-section.

According to prosecutors, Edwards and Williams began dating last fall, but she had stopped speaking to him and blocked his phone number due to alleged domestic violence and threats. The family was in the process of seeking a restraining order but delayed filing until they moved so Williams would not know their new address.

Prosecutors said Williams was dropped off several houses from the rental home and hid nearby. He allegedly arranged for a DoorDash delivery of flowers to the address.

Edwards initially came outside with a family member, but Williams did not attack at that time. After she went back inside, Williams arranged for another DoorDash delivery of a vase.

When Edwards emerged alone, Williams shot her. Williams pleaded not guilty last week to charges of murder, attempted murder, and possession of a machine gun.

A GoFundMe page described Jariah as a "bright, loving young woman" who was surrounded by family and friends who "cherished her deeply." The case has drawn attention to domestic violence and the dangers faced by victims seeking to escape abusive relationships.
