Health Officials Urge Immediate Action on Recalled Nara Baby Formula Over Botulism Risk

San Antonio, health, recall, botulism, baby formula

San Diego County public health officials are urging parents and caregivers to immediately discard or return Nara Organics Whole Milk Organic Infant Formula, following a multi-state outbreak of infant botulism. The voluntary recall covers all lots of the product sold online at Nara.com and in Target stores from July 2025 through June 2026.

Botulism cases have been confirmed in California, Pennsylvania, and Washington.

Infant botulism occurs when bacteria grow in a baby's intestines and produce a toxin that can lead to muscle weakness, difficulty breathing, and other serious complications if not treated promptly, county officials explained. The county's Environmental Health and Quality team is actively working with local retailers to remove the product from shelves.

According to a county statement, if a baby has consumed the recalled formula and the container is still open, the Food and Drug Administration advises photographing or recording the brand and lot number, sealing and labeling the container "do not use," and storing it for 30 days in case health officials need to test it. Parents are urged to seek immediate medical care if an infant shows symptoms after using the formula.

Infant botulism primarily affects babies younger than six months. Symptoms can appear three to 30 days after exposure and may include constipation, poor feeding, weak crying, loss of head control, and trouble swallowing.

Health officials emphasize the importance of swift action to protect vulnerable infants.
