This weekend in San Diego County, a convergence of celebrations offers something for everyone, from Juneteenth observances and Father's Day events to a major NASCAR race weekend. The Juneteenth Cooper Family Foundation Celebration, held for over 50 years, invites attendees to Memorial Community Park on Ocean View Boulevard with live gospel and jazz, a health and wellness area, food trucks, and a performance by Los Angeles tribute group Durti-Ryce.
Meanwhile, Paddle For Peace hosts its sixth Juneteenth event at La Jolla Shores Beach, featuring a volleyball tournament, music by DJ Birdy Bird, and a community fashion show. In North Park, Louisiana Purchase restaurant presents a block party with live music and spoken word at the corner of Louisiana Street and University Avenue.
The Origin Hip Hop Academy in Carlsbad offers a Soul Food Dinner Show on Friday and free dance classes on Saturday. San Diego's largest Juneteenth celebration, Kinfolk Fest, takes place at Waterfront Park on Saturday with over 100 Black-owned vendors, live entertainment, and games.
Other notable Juneteenth events include the Love City Heights Live Open Mic special show, the NAACP Juneteenth Cultural Celebration in Oceanside with free health screenings and a basketball contest, an R&B Block Party at The Quartyard in East Village, and The Freedom Table at TERI Campus of Life. Additionally, the NASCAR San Diego Weekend at Naval Air Station North Island in Coronado features three races: the Craftsman Truck Series on Friday, the O'Reilly Auto Parts Series on Saturday, and the NASCAR Cup Series on Sunday.
For those unable to attend, the Manchester Grand Hyatt in downtown San Diego hosts free Race Day Social events. Other weekend highlights include A Day At The Park at Chula Vista's Bayfront Park with kids' activities, a custom car show, and live entertainment; the inaugural Monarch Butterfly Festival at Crestridge Ecological Reserve; the San Diego Wooden Boat Festival at Koehler Kraft Boatyard & Marina; and the Summer Solstice Market in Hillcrest at Manor Coffee Bar.
