The Redlands Area Panhellenic Association has awarded a total of $10,000 in scholarships to two college students, announced during the group's April 25 luncheon at the Redlands Country Club. Alexandra Gilbreth received the Geraldine M.

Derkum Panhellenic Foundation Award, and Brooklyn Rios won the Charline Ketcherside Major Donor Award, each receiving $5,000.

To qualify, applicants must have a permanent home address in the greater Redlands area, be currently enrolled in college, and be initiated members in good standing in National Panhellenic Council sororities, according to a news release. The scholarship funds are administered by the Redlands Community Foundation, whose director, Lynn Whitmer, attended the luncheon as a guest.

Gilbreth, a member of Delta Delta Delta at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, is majoring in agricultural communications and public relations and strategic communications, with a minor in political science. She recently completed an internship with the Indiana House of Representatives and has been accepted to summer internships with the Almond Growers Association of California and Chipotle Mexican Grill.

Rios, a member of Kappa Alpha Theta at the University of Southern California, is majoring in business administration with an emphasis on sports media industries, player operations, and athletic representation. She has interned with Steinberg Sports and Entertainment and the USC recruiting operation, and serves as a Game Day marketing intern for USC.

She has also volunteered with the Sports Business Association, which supports low-income youth with access, gear, and financial support.

The Derkum scholarship honors Geraldine M. Derkum, a former president of the Redlands Area Panhellenic Association and a member of Alpha Chi Omega at UCLA.

The Ketcherside award is named for Charline Ketcherside, who attended the University of New Mexico, where she was president of Pi Beta Phi. She later became a teacher and served as president of the Redlands Panhellenic and as founding president of the Geraldine M.

Derkum Scholarship Foundation. Ketcherside also held leadership roles with the Breakfast Club of Redlands, Chapter N of P.E.O., the Redlands Community Hospital Foundation, and the Kimberly-Shirk Foundation, and was named a University of Redlands Town and Gown Woman of Distinction in 2000.

This year's scholarship is the first from her recently established endowment fund.

Organized in 1949, the Redlands Area Panhellenic Association has awarded more than 90 scholarships since 1982. Current officers include co-presidents Gloria Moreland and Rachel Shaw, treasurer Linda Rylett, and secretary Jeanne Clark.

Peggi Cook and Christy Salazar continue as scholarship co-chairpersons, assisted by Amber Costa, Gloria Moreland, Linda Rylett, and Lynn Whitmer.

Upcoming activities include ushering at the August 4 Redlands Bowl Summer Music Festival concert with a potluck, a no-host social event on September 23 at J. Riley Distillery, and the Southern California Council of Associations of Panhellenics meeting on October 18.

Plans also include a December gathering and providing a dinner for the Family Service Association of Redlands. For more information, contact Peggi Cook at 760-333-9131.
