Free Summer Reading Program for Plumas County Youth Starts June 15

education, school, events

The Plumas County Library has announced the start of its free Summer Reading Program, which began on June 15 and will continue through August. The program is open to all children and youth aged 0 to 18 across all library branches in the county.

Importantly, a library card is not required to participate, making the program accessible to all families.

The 2026 theme for the program is “Plant a Seed, Read!” Participants can visit their local library branch to pick up a reading challenge log. Each child sets a weekly reading goal, either by themselves or with the help of a parent or caregiver.

Goals can be measured in pages per day, minutes per day, or books per day or week. For children who cannot yet read independently, being read to by a caregiver counts toward their goal.

Once readers meet their weekly goal, they bring their log to the library branch, and staff will mark that week as completed. The reader may then choose a prize and fill out a ticket for a chance to win a gift card or gift certificate after the challenge concludes in August.

Each branch will hold its own drawing and prize giveaway.

In addition to the reading challenge, live presentations will be offered at each branch throughout the summer break. Library staff encourage the community to watch the library's Facebook page and look for flyers for more details on these events.

However, branch story times are on hold during the Summer Reading Program.

This initiative provides a valuable opportunity for children and teens in Plumas County to stay engaged in learning and reading during the summer months, while also enjoying fun activities and prizes.
