Palisades Fire Arson Trial Begins as Los Angeles Community Struggles to Rebuild

The federal arson trial for Jonathan Rinderknecht, the man accused of starting last year's deadly Palisades Fire, began Monday in Los Angeles. Rinderknecht, 29, has pleaded not guilty to charges that include starting a fire on January 1, 2025, which burned undetected in root systems before re-emerging on January 7 and becoming one of the most destructive wildfires in California history.

The fire killed 12 people and destroyed thousands of homes in Pacific Palisades and Malibu. Prosecutors allege Rinderknecht was upset over a failed relationship and thwarted New Year's Eve plans, and that he ranted to Uber passengers about being angry at the world.

They cite geolocation data from his phone placing him near the fire's origin and a Bic barbecue lighter seized from his car. Defense attorney Steve Haney argues Rinderknecht is being scapegoated for the Los Angeles Fire Department's failure to fully extinguish the earlier fire, but Judge Anne Hwang has ruled that evidence of alleged fire department negligence is inadmissible.

Jury selection is expected to last several days, with opening statements midweek and the trial likely to take about two weeks. The trial has stirred mixed emotions among Pacific Palisades residents, who have spent over a year dealing with insurance claims and building permits.

Meghan Wald, whose home survived, said the trial brings back all the emotions of the past year. Many lots remain vacant, with only 17 of over 450 construction projects certified for occupancy.

The fire has become a central issue in Mayor Karen Bass's reelection bid, as she was in Ghana when the fire started. Challenger Spencer Pratt, who lost his home, has made municipal ineptitude a campaign message.

Lena Loh, a skin care clinic owner, said the prosecution offers no relief, calling the fire a city issue that needed better management.
