Deadly Shooting in Midland, Texas: Suspect Killed After Standoff

Midland, crime, shooting, police

MIDLAND, Texas (AP) — A deadly shooting in the West Texas city of Midland on Friday morning left one person dead and at least nine others injured, according to Mayor Lori Blong. The suspect, who was involved in a standoff with police hours after the attack, is now dead.

Midland police confirmed that the active shooter situation ended near a veterinary hospital, but did not immediately disclose how the suspect died.

The shooting began around 8 a.m. in one part of the city before moving to an area near a veterinary hospital.

Witness Andrea Mendias, who works at a nearby auto body shop, reported hearing at least 40 shots. Video footage from Mendias showed officers deploying from an armored vehicle and using robots to approach the scene.

Midland Memorial Hospital reported that four victims were in the operating room, while five others were in stable condition. The city of approximately 140,000 residents, located in the heart of Texas's oil region, was the site of a similar tragedy six years ago.

In that incident, a gunman who had been fired from his oil services job killed seven people and wounded two dozen others in a random shooting spree across Odessa and Midland.

The current incident remains under investigation, and authorities have not released the identity of the suspect or the victims. The community is once again grappling with the aftermath of gun violence, as officials work to secure the area and provide support to those affected.
