The Board of Directors of the Arts Council of Mendocino County has announced the 2026 Mendocino County Arts Champion Honorees, recognizing outstanding contributions to the arts across multiple categories. The honorees were nominated by the community in April 2026, during California Arts Culture and Creativity Month, and selected by the Arts Council board.

In the Artist category, Dr. Wenbo Yin, a saxophonist, wind conductor, and musicians’ wellness coach, is honored for his bold and versatile artistry across genres.

Yin has performed as a soloist at Carnegie Hall, collaborated with Grammy-winning artists, and won the Beverly Hills National Auditions. He serves as faculty and director of Jazz Ensemble and Symphonic Wind at Mendocino College and co-founded the One Heart Institute, a nonprofit integrating music, wellness, and holistic practices.

Yin has facilitated music and mindfulness workshops in the U.S., Bhutan, and China, and developed the Tai Chi for Musicians workshop for universities. He holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and deepened his practice at Dharma Realm Buddhist University in Ukiah.

Chris Pugh, honored in the Individual category, is a photographer, writer, newspaper editor, and community arts organizer based in Ukiah. He co-founded Medium Art Center, a nonprofit community arts organization providing accessible exhibitions, workshops, youth programming, and creative events.

Pugh emphasized that small communities deserve spaces where creativity can flourish without barriers, expressing gratitude for community support.

Marilyn Bohlen Simpson, honored in the Educator category, began teaching voice at Mendocino College in 1986 and retired this May. A graduate of Principia College, she earned a Master’s Degree in Music History and Literature from San Francisco State University.

She has coached vocalists for musical theatre productions at Ukiah Players Theatre and Mendocino College and remains active singing in local groups. She serves as treasurer of the Ukiah Community Concert Association and her church and continues private voice instruction.

In the Business category, Shanachie Pub in Willits is recognized as a hub for original music, offering 20 taps of microbrews and hosting bands from across California and the Pacific Northwest. The pub’s Open Mic night provides a platform for musicians to test material and find audiences.

Owner Pete has operated several businesses in Willits and Laytonville, including Main St Music and Video and Flying Dog Pizza & Records, fostering local culture.

An Honorable Mention was awarded to the Lot on Main, a community space created by naming a vacant lot. Organizers noted that the effort involves artists, musicians, vendors, and supporters working together to make the space possible.
