The Arts Council of Mendocino County has announced the 2026 Mendocino County Arts Champion Honorees, recognizing individuals and organizations that have significantly contributed to the local arts scene. The honorees were nominated by community members in April 2026, in celebration of California Arts, Culture, and Creativity Month.
Dr. Wenbo Yin, honored in the Artist category, is a saxophonist, wind conductor, and musicians’ wellness coach known for his versatile artistry across multiple genres.
He has performed as a soloist at Carnegie Hall, collaborated with Grammy-winning artists, and won the Beverly Hills National Auditions. Yin serves as faculty and director of Jazz Ensemble and Symphonic Wind at Mendocino College.
He co-founded the One Heart Institute, a nonprofit integrating music, wellness, and holistic practices, and has facilitated music and mindfulness workshops in the U.S., Bhutan, and China. Yin also developed the Tai Chi for Musicians workshop, offered at various universities.
He holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and studied Tai Chi and philosophy at Dharma Realm Buddhist University in Ukiah.
Chris Pugh, honored in the Individual category, is a photographer, writer, newspaper editor, and community arts organizer based in Ukiah. He co-founded Medium Art Center, a nonprofit community arts organization providing accessible exhibitions, workshops, youth programming, and creative events.
Pugh emphasizes the importance of barrier-free spaces for creativity and connection in small communities.
Marilyn Bohlen Simpson, honored in the Educator category, began teaching voice at Mendocino College in 1986 and retired this May. She holds a Master’s Degree in Music History and Literature from San Francisco State University.
Simpson has coached vocalists in musical theater productions and remains active in local singing groups. She serves as treasurer of the Ukiah Community Concert Association and her church, and continues private voice teaching.
Shanachie Pub in Willits received the Business category honor. The pub, known for hosting original music and offering 20 microbrew taps, draws bands from across California and the Pacific Northwest.
Its Open Mic night provides a platform for musicians to test new material. Owner Pete has also operated Main St Music and Video and Flying Dog Pizza & Records, contributing to Willits’ cultural vitality.
An Honorable Mention was given to the Lot on Main, a community-driven space in Willits that hosts artists, musicians, vendors, and supporters. The recognition highlights the collective effort of the community in making the venue possible.
