Man with Multiple Vehicle Theft Convictions Charged in Two More Alleged Thefts in Oakland

Martinez, Oakland, crime, traffic

Caleb Grant, a man with multiple prior vehicle theft convictions, has been charged with two additional alleged thefts in Oakland. The charges include felony counts of assaulting a peace officer, resisting arrest, and carrying a loaded gun in public, as well as misdemeanor charges of resisting arrest and possessing marijuana for sale.

Grant remained hospitalized at his first court appearance on May 28 and had not yet been booked in jail, according to court records. The minute order from the hearing indicates he appeared remotely and was being assisted by Oakland police.

Judge Thomas Reardon signed an order releasing Grant without bail, stating that the subject of his booking would be dealt with later. Grant is next due in court on June 12.

The charging records allege that police pulled Grant over for a moving violation on the 1300 block of 9th Avenue at around 3:10 p.m. Police said they observed him trying to pull out a gun from inside his car.

Officers Ariel Gonzalez-Martinez and Sione Fili attempted to pull Grant out of the car and arrest him. Grant allegedly accelerated, dragging Gonzalez-Martinez into his car.

The officer then allegedly shot Grant once, wounding him. Police said at the time of the incident that both officers were briefly hospitalized as well.

Police say they found a gun in Grant’s car, which had been reported stolen in a 2025 Oakland home burglary. A large quantity of marijuana was found in Grant’s car, and a large amount of cash was found on his person, authorities said in court filings.

The shooting was the second involving Oakland officers in a three-week span. There have been four other reported Oakland police shootings since February 2023.
