Man Drowns After Being Swept Away by San Joaquin River Current

Fresno, incident, accident, police, health

A 24-year-old man drowned on Tuesday after being swept away by the current of the San Joaquin River in Fresno County. The incident occurred around 5:30 p.m.

when James Romero Soriano was at the river with a small group of friends. Despite not knowing how to swim, Soriano entered the water.

The river's current quickly carried him away, and he went underwater. Friends called 911 and searched for him, finding him after about 15 minutes and pulling him to shore.

Deputies, Cal Fire firefighters, and EMS personnel arrived and began CPR. A SkyLife helicopter landed and flew Soriano to Community Regional Medical Center, where he later died.

The Fresno County Sheriff's Office is reminding the public of river safety: wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket that fits properly; stay out of the water if you are not an experienced swimmer; parents should watch children at all times; do not mix alcohol and swimming; understand that hot weather causes faster fatigue; the water remains cold and currents are often stronger than they appear; debris in the water can create hazards; be cautious of mud on river and lake bottoms, which can trap feet; and use your feet to feel for sudden drop-offs.
