A 22-year-old man was taken into custody Wednesday morning after barricading himself inside a southwest Bakersfield apartment with a rifle, prompting a response from the Bakersfield Police Department's SWAT team. The incident began around 4:16 a.m.
on June 10, 2026, when officers responded to multiple reports of gunfire in the 4600 block of Country Place Lane. Upon arrival, police quickly identified the apartment where the suspect, later identified as Enrique Barraza, was barricaded and established a perimeter.
SWAT personnel were called to the scene, and for several hours, officers made repeated calls for Barraza to surrender, but he refused to exit the apartment. Eventually, a chemical agent was deployed into the unit, forcing Barraza to leave the building, where he was taken into custody without further incident.
Police confirmed that no one was injured during the standoff. The investigation remains active, and authorities have asked community members to avoid the area.
The Bakersfield Police Department continues to gather evidence and details surrounding the incident.
