California's dining scene is celebrating a remarkable achievement, with several restaurants and chefs from the state earning top honors at the 2026 James Beard Restaurant and Chef Awards. The awards, announced on June 15 by the James Beard Foundation, were presented at a ceremony held at the Lyric Opera of Chicago.
These prestigious annual awards recognize outstanding culinary talent across the United States, highlighting the people and establishments that shape the nation's dining culture. In addition to established restaurants, the awards honor chefs, restaurateurs, and beverage professionals whose work reflects innovation and excellence.
The winners from California include Michael Tusk of Quince in San Francisco, who received the Outstanding Chef award. The Outstanding Hospitality award went to Providence in Los Angeles.
Kato, also in Los Angeles, won the Outstanding Wine and Other Beverages Program award. Kevin Diedrich of Pacific Cocktail Haven in San Francisco was recognized as Outstanding Professional in Cocktail Service.
In the Best Chefs (California) category, Dave Beran of Seline in Santa Monica took the honor.
The Outstanding Chef award is given to a chef who sets high culinary standards and serves as a positive example to others, with a requirement that the chef has worked for at least five years. The Outstanding Hospitality award recognizes a restaurant or bar that fosters a sense of hospitality among diners and staff while demonstrating consistent excellence in food, atmosphere, operations, and hospitality.
The Outstanding Professional in Cocktail Service award focuses on the selection, preparation, and serving of wine, cocktails, spirits, coffee, tea, beer, or other beverages with outstanding hospitality and service.
This year's recognition underscores Los Angeles's vibrant dining landscape and its reputation as one of the country's most dynamic dining destinations, where chefs and hospitality professionals continue to innovate and earn national acclaim. For nearly 40 years, the James Beard Awards have been considered one of the highest honors in the American dining industry.
Since its inception in 1986, the James Beard Foundation has evolved from an organization honoring excellent food into a changemaker and thought leader, working to advance excellence in the independent restaurant industry through education, advocacy, recognition, and community-based initiatives. The foundation is named after James Beard, often called the "Dean of American cookery," who championed local ingredients and regional culinary traditions long before they became mainstream.
Through his cookbooks, cooking schools, and television appearances, he helped shape the way Americans think about food and inspired generations of home cooks and professional chefs.
