L.A. Care Health Plan, the nation's largest publicly operated health plan, is launching a grant program offering up to $300,000 to community-based organizations that help residents maintain their Medi-Cal coverage.
The initiative, announced on June 17, 2026, aims to address the high rate of disenrollment among Medi-Cal beneficiaries, particularly in underserved areas of Los Angeles County. The grants are part of L.A.
Care's ongoing efforts to ensure continuous health coverage for low-income individuals and families who rely on the state's Medicaid program.
According to L.A. Care officials, many residents lose their Medi-Cal coverage due to administrative hurdles, such as failing to complete renewal paperwork or not responding to requests for updated income information.
The grant-funded organizations will provide direct assistance with enrollment, renewal applications, and navigating the complex Medi-Cal system. The program targets communities with historically high disenrollment rates, including parts of South Los Angeles, the San Fernando Valley, and East Los Angeles.
"We know that losing health coverage can have devastating consequences for individuals and families," said a L.A. Care spokesperson.
"By partnering with trusted community organizations, we can reach those most at risk of losing their Medi-Cal and help them stay covered." The grants will be awarded to nonprofits, clinics, and other community groups that have a proven track record of serving Medi-Cal populations. Applications are open now, with funding expected to be distributed later this year.
The announcement comes amid a broader state effort to reduce Medi-Cal churn, as California prepares for the end of the continuous coverage requirement tied to the COVID-19 public health emergency. L.A.
Care's grant program is seen as a critical tool to prevent coverage gaps and ensure that residents continue to have access to essential health services.
