Jury Selection Begins in Palisades Fire Arson Trial

Jury selection commenced Monday in the federal arson trial of Jonathan Rinderknecht, a 29-year-old Florida man accused of igniting a small blaze that later rekindled into the deadly Palisades Fire. The trial, taking place in Los Angeles, centers on the Lachman Fire, which started on January 1 and was initially suppressed by firefighters.

However, the fire continued to smolder underground in root systems before flaring up again on January 7, when a historic Santa Ana windstorm fanned the flames into a devastating inferno that swept through Pacific Palisades, Malibu, and other coastal neighborhoods. The disaster killed 12 people and destroyed thousands of homes.

Rinderknecht has pleaded not guilty. His lead defense attorney, Steve Haney, argues that his client is being scapegoated for the Los Angeles Fire Department's failure to fully extinguish the original fire.

Defense attorneys had planned to introduce testimony from a firefighter who stated that the earlier fire was visibly smoldering when first responders left the scene, a detail gathered from a civil lawsuit filed by fire victims against the city. Haney also contends that the government lacks solid evidence or witness testimony directly linking Rinderknecht to the first fire, and that first responders heard fireworks in the area where the blaze started.

Prosecutors, however, point to geolocation data from Rinderknecht's phone showing he was in the area as the fire rapidly grew. Investigators also seized a Bic barbecue lighter from his car, which he admitted to having with him on the trail.

According to an April 29 pretrial memo from the U.S. attorney's office, prosecutors will argue that Rinderknecht was upset over a failed relationship and thwarted New Year's Eve plans, and that he ranted to his Uber passengers that evening about being angry at the world.

Jury selection is expected to last several days, with opening statements likely to begin midweek. The trial is anticipated to take about two weeks.

The Palisades Fire has also become a theme in this year's Los Angeles mayoral primary election, pitting incumbent Karen Bass against Councilmember Nithya Raman and former reality TV star Spencer Pratt.
