On June 1, a Japanese delegation of scientists and wetland advocates toured Petaluma's wetlands as part of a broader study of American wetlands. The visit was organized by Dr.
Komatsu Masayuki and facilitated by Andrew Chang of the Smithsonian Institution. The delegation included a farmer planning to create wetlands, a biologist, a translator, and two wetland scientists.
They interviewed Petaluma Wetlands Alliance members about the organization's formation, goals, and public support strategies. The visitors expressed admiration for the scale of Petaluma's wetlands and partnerships with the city.
They showed particular interest in marsh restoration projects that allow wetlands to migrate inland as sediment accumulates, addressing sea-level rise. The tour highlights international collaboration on wetland conservation and climate adaptation.
