Israeli Strikes Kill 8 in Southern Lebanon After Trump Says Hezbollah Agreed to Ceasefire

Israeli airstrikes killed at least eight people in southern Lebanon on Tuesday, hours after former President Donald Trump claimed Hezbollah had agreed to a ceasefire. The strikes hit multiple locations, including a drone attack near Marjayoun that killed dentist James Karam and his two children.

Separate strikes in Jibchit, Toul, and near Harouf killed five others, according to Lebanon's state-run National News Agency (NNA). A drone strike on Jibchit killed two Syrian workers at a plant nursery, while another on Toul killed two people.

A third strike hit a car near Harouf, killing one person. NNA also reported that an Israeli airstrike on Monday killed six in the southern village of Marwaniyeh.

The Israeli military said its 91st Division and Air Force struck weapons storage facilities, command centers, and other terror infrastructure in southern Lebanon from which Hezbollah operatives were active. Hezbollah claimed its fighters fired anti-tank missiles at Israeli troops advancing into the village of Hadatha, about 7 kilometers (4 miles) from the Israeli border.

Sirens sounded in several areas of northern Israel, and the military reported a suspicious aerial target in the area where Israeli soldiers were operating, with no injuries reported. The Israeli military also confirmed that one soldier was killed and seven others wounded, three of them severely, in southern Lebanon.

The renewed violence comes despite a Washington-brokered ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah reached in April. A second round of talks between Israel and Lebanon is expected Tuesday or Wednesday in Washington, where Lebanese negotiators will seek a full ceasefire to prevent future attacks.

The escalation has complicated broader diplomatic efforts, as the U.S. and Iran gave conflicting accounts of the status of negotiations related to the war that began in February.

Within an hour on Monday, Trump said both that he did not care whether peace talks with Iran were over and that negotiations were continuing at a rapid pace. His comments followed reports from multiple Iranian state-run news outlets that Tehran had withdrawn from talks after Israeli strikes in Lebanon.
