Injured SFPD Officer and Arrested Suspect in Sunday Shooting Both Identified

Bayview, San Francisco, Oakland, crime, police, shooting

The San Francisco police officer critically injured in a shooting Sunday night has been identified as Brittney Taylor, a seven-year veteran assigned to Southern Station's overnight patrol, known as Southern Midnights. The suspect, Norris Reed III, a 36-year-old Oakland resident and convicted felon on parole, has been arrested and charged with multiple offenses, including assault upon a peace officer with a semiautomatic firearm.

The incident began around 10:29 p.m. Sunday when SFPD was alerted to a robbery suspect's vehicle crossing the Bay Bridge from Oakland into San Francisco.

Officers spotted the vehicle near Fifth and Folsom streets in SoMa and attempted a traffic stop at Mission and First streets. The driver fled, leading a chase into the Bayview District, where the vehicle became disabled near Bayshore Boulevard and Jerrold Avenue.

According to Police Chief Derrick Lew, when officers approached, Reed opened fire with a semi-automatic weapon, striking Taylor multiple times. Officers returned fire, critically wounding the passenger, who remains hospitalized and has not been publicly identified.

Two firearms were recovered at the scene. Reed fled on foot but was apprehended nearby after a shelter staff member alerted police.

Taylor was rushed to San Francisco General Hospital and is expected to survive. The San Francisco Police Officers Association launched a crowdfunding campaign that has raised over $75,000.

Chief Lew described Taylor as "extremely popular" and known for her "hard-nosed work ethic." She received a special commendation in 2024 for apprehending a suspect with a stolen gun and narcotics.

Reed faces charges including assault with a semiautomatic firearm, reckless evading, resisting arrest, and possession of a firearm by a prohibited person. The passenger may also face charges.

The shootout, captured by ShotSpotter, involved 19 shots from high-capacity weapons, causing damage to a nearby Chevron gas station. Mayor Daniel Lurie visited the hospital and vowed to use all tools to keep the city safe.
