High Surf Brings Dangerous Coastal Conditions to LA Area Beaches

Los Angeles, weather, storm, transport, Los Angeles County, Orange County, Warning

The surf is up and dangerous conditions are prompting rip current warnings as south-facing beaches in Los Angeles County are pounded by cleanly breaking waves up to 9 feet high. The swells arrived on Tuesday and built throughout the day, with a similar warning in effect for Orange County.

The National Weather Service issued a Beach Hazards Statement warning of increasing wave heights and rip currents that can quickly pull swimmers away from shore. Los Angeles County lifeguards advise anyone entering the water to understand the risks and assess conditions by talking to a lifeguard before getting into the surf.

There is an increased risk of ocean drowning, as rip currents can pull swimmers and surfers out to sea, and waves can wash people off beaches and rocks, as well as capsize small boats near shore. Rock jetties and groins are particularly dangerous during such conditions, with a high risk of being washed into the water, according to the NWS.
