Fundraiser Organized for SF Officer Injured in Shootout

Boulevard, San Francisco, crime, police, shooting

The San Francisco Police Officers Association has identified the officer shot and injured during a call on Sunday as Brittney Taylor, and the union has organized a fundraiser for her family. Officer Taylor is recovering from life-threatening gunshot wounds sustained in the line of duty, the union said Monday.

According to police, the incident began shortly after 10:30 p.m. Sunday when officers attempted to pull over two suspects in a car near Mission and First streets, allegedly linked to a robbery.

The driver fled, prompting a chase through city streets. The pursuit ended when the suspects crashed near Bayshore Boulevard and Jerrold Avenue.

Police said the driver then opened fire on officers as they arrived at the crash scene, striking Taylor multiple times. Officers returned fire, hitting a passenger in the car.

The passenger was taken to the hospital in critical condition. The driver, identified as Norris Reed III, 36, fled on foot but was later found near Bayshore Boulevard and Costa Street and taken into custody.

Two firearms were recovered.

Reed was booked into jail on suspicion of attempted murder, assault on a police officer with a semiautomatic firearm, resisting arrest, being a violent felon in possession of a firearm, reckless evading, conspiracy, assault with a deadly weapon causing great bodily injury, and carrying a concealed firearm in a vehicle, among other charges.

Louis Wong, president of the San Francisco Police Officers Association, said Taylor was in surgery Monday morning and is expected to survive. The San Francisco District Attorney's Office, the Police Department's Investigative Services Division and Internal Affairs Division, and the Department of Police Accountability are investigating the shooting.

A public town hall on the officer-involved shooting will be held within 10 days.
