Stellantis, the parent company of Chrysler, has announced a recall of nearly 1.08 million Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator vehicles in the United States due to a potential fire hazard that can occur even when the engine is off. The recall, which was reported to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), affects model years 2021 through 2025.
The issue stems from an electrical connection problem in the electric hydraulic power steering pump wiring. According to Stellantis, in rare circumstances, this defect can cause combustible materials to overheat, potentially leading to a vehicle fire.
The NHTSA has warned that fires could break out even when the vehicle is parked and the ignition is switched off.
Out of an abundance of caution, Stellantis is advising owners to park their vehicles away from structures or other vehicles until the necessary repairs are completed. The company stated that it is working diligently to provide a remedy and anticipates a solution no later than July.
Affected customers will be notified by first-class mail when they can schedule service.
In addition to the U.S. recall, approximately 253,000 more vehicles in Canada, Mexico, and other markets outside North America are also included in the recall.
Stellantis emphasized that it is taking this action to ensure the safety of its customers and to prevent any potential incidents.
Owners with questions or concerns can contact Stellantis customer service or visit the NHTSA website for more information. The company urges all affected drivers to follow the safety advice and park away from buildings and other vehicles until the recall repair is performed.
