The Madera County Sheriff's Office has released preliminary details regarding a deputy-involved shooting that occurred on June 19, 2026, in the area of Avenue 12 and Road 35. According to officials, dispatchers received a 9-1-1 call at approximately 4:39 p.m.
reporting a residential burglary in progress. Within a minute, a second call came in describing a male subject carrying a crowbar and charging at passing vehicles.
It was initially unclear whether the two incidents were connected.
A sheriff's deputy arrived on scene and made contact with the suspect. During the ensuing struggle, the suspect managed to take control of the deputy's department-issued TASER and fired it at her, striking the deputy with the probes.
Multiple citizens called 9-1-1 as the deputy and suspect continued fighting on the ground. Several community members intervened to assist the deputy, and callers reported that the suspect was attempting to gain control of the deputy's firearm.
Despite the combined efforts of the deputy and the assisting citizens, the suspect continued to resist. At approximately 4:56 p.m., the deputy discharged her service weapon, striking the suspect.
Deputies, Cal Fire, and EMS personnel immediately provided life-saving measures, but the suspect was pronounced deceased at the scene. The deputy sustained minor injuries and was treated by EMS.
The investigation remains active and is being conducted in accordance with established protocols for deputy-involved shootings. Additional information will be released as it becomes available.
Sheriff Tyson Pogue expressed gratitude to the community members who assisted during the incident, stating, "We are grateful for the citizens who acted courageously to assist our deputy during an extremely dangerous and rapidly evolving situation."
