California Primary Election: Voters Decide Governor and Congressional Races

Californians are casting their final votes today in a primary election that will determine the candidates for governor and U.S. House seats, setting the stage for the November general election.

The election will decide who succeeds Governor Gavin Newsom, who is term-limited after two terms, and will shape the balance of power in Congress during the final two years of President Trump's administration. Under California's top-two primary system, the two candidates with the most votes, regardless of party affiliation, will advance to the November ballot.

In tight races, final results may take days or even weeks to be certified. Ballots postmarked by today can be received and counted until June 9, and the secretary of state has until July 10 to certify the official results.
