California's gubernatorial primary concluded Tuesday after a chaotic and crowded contest, with voters choosing from a field of about 60 candidates to replace termed-out Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom. The top two finishers, regardless of party, will advance to the November general election.

The central issue was California's high cost of living, including gas prices averaging $6.08 per gallon, a median home price of $775,000, and the second-highest residential electricity rates in the nation.

Candidates proposed solutions ranging from suspending the state's gas taxes to expanding government-run healthcare. Republicans criticized one-party Democratic rule, while Democrats focused on fighting Trump administration policies.

The primary system, which places all candidates on a single ballot, initially raised concerns that two Republicans could advance, but recent polling suggested a split outcome. The final results may take days or weeks due to mail-in ballot counting rules.

This election marks the first time in over two decades without a political superstar in the race, following the eras of Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jerry Brown, and Gavin Newsom.
