A couple in Bonita, Ryan Cunningham (aka Chef Pennywise) and Kalina, have turned a childhood dream into a reality by opening a burger joint in their home called Burger Kook. Operating under a microenterprise home kitchen permit, they serve what they bill as the world's second-best burger, a playful nod to the common claim of being the best.

The restaurant is located on Central Avenue in a residential neighborhood, identifiable by yellow umbrellas in the front yard, as commercial signage is not permitted.

The menu features a classic cheeseburger with a smash-style patty made from a custom blend of top sirloin, filet mignon, and rib-eye from Central Meat and Provision, a San Diego company with over 125 years of history. The burger comes with lettuce, tomato, pickle, grilled onions, kook sauce, and American cheese, and is praised for its crispy, lacy edges and flavorful meat.

The reviewer also enjoyed an Orange Cream milkshake made with Thrifty Ice Cream, evoking nostalgic memories of Creamsicles.

Burger Kook offers a deep menu including corn dogs, beef tallow fries, a Nashville Hot Chicken Sandwich, and a pizza burger. The staff is described as friendly and knowledgeable.

For those unable to make the trip, the reviewer recommends Double Standard in town for a budget-friendly burger deal.

Burger Kook is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11:30 am to 8 pm. The reviewer, a third-generation Coronado local and trained chef, highly recommends the experience, noting that the food and service exceed expectations.
