Blue Origin Rocket Explodes During Test, Threatening NASA's Moon Plans

Kennedy, Cape Canaveral, technology, accident, space

A catastrophic explosion during a static fire test at Cape Canaveral, Florida, on Thursday night has dealt a major blow to Blue Origin's role in NASA's Artemis moon program. The New Glenn rocket, a key component of Blue Origin's lunar ambitions, was destroyed along with its transporter erector tower, and one of two lightning towers at Launch Complex 36 was knocked over.

The incident occurred as the rocket was undergoing a routine engine test ahead of an anticipated launch. The explosion leaves NASA's timeline for the Artemis III mission, currently targeting a mid-2027 launch, in jeopardy.

Blue Origin had been developing the Blue Moon MK2 crewed lunar lander, which was slated to participate in that mission. With no backup launch site for the New Glenn rocket, the company faces a lengthy recovery process.

NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman acknowledged the difficulty of spaceflight, stating, "Spaceflight is unforgiving, and developing new heavy-lift launch capability is extraordinarily difficult." The space agency had recently awarded Blue Origin two additional contracts worth $468 million for uncrewed lunar missions using the Blue Moon MK1 lander, including a rover delivery to the moon's South Pole. If Blue Origin cannot recover in time, NASA may be forced to rely solely on SpaceX's Starship for the Artemis III and IV missions.

SpaceX has its own launch infrastructure under development at Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral. Blue Origin founder Jeff Bezos said, "It's too early to know the root cause but we're already working to find it.

Very rough day, but we'll rebuild whatever needs rebuilding and get back to flying." The company had invested over $1 billion in the Cape Canaveral site and nearly $2 million more in manufacturing facilities on Merritt Island. The destroyed rocket was the third first stage completed by Blue Origin and was named "No, It's Necessary." Despite the setback, other launches continued from the Cape, including a SpaceX Falcon 9 mission and a United Launch Alliance Atlas V launch within 24 hours of the explosion.
