Looking for something to do this Saturday night? Head to the historic USS Midway in San Diego for the 21st Annual Battle of the Badges charity boxing event.
The floating fortress, one of San Diego’s most iconic landmarks, will host a night of intense boxing matches featuring local law enforcement, first responders, and military personnel going toe-to-toe on the flight deck.
The event benefits the Community Youth Athletic Center (CYAC) in National City, which partners with the National Latino Peace Officers Association. CYAC aims to give back to San Diego’s youth through life-changing programs, including tutoring and computer access for students from economically challenged homes.
Executive Director Clemente Casillas noted that the center has helped produce national champions and numerous university graduates.
One of the main events is a rematch between National City Police Officer Christina Soto and San Diego Police Officer Krystle Jordan. Soto won their first bout and is seeking another victory this Saturday.
Reflecting on the significance of fighting on the USS Midway, Soto said, "It almost feels surreal, it feels fake. Think about the history of that ship and what that ship has seen, what it has gone through.
To be a part of something so historical, to stand for something that is way bigger than all of us."
The event honors first responders while directly supporting the communities they serve, making it a memorable and meaningful night for all involved.
