The Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary will host a series of free, family-friendly events this weekend, offering residents and visitors a chance to explore the area's natural beauty and diverse wildlife. On Saturday, the Friends of the Arcata Marsh will lead a free guided tour of the sanctuary.
Participants will meet leader Gina Rogers at 2 p.m. in the lobby of the Arcata Marsh Interpretive Center, located on South G Street.
The 90-minute walk will take place rain or shine, covering the sanctuary's trails and providing insights into its history and conservation efforts. For further details, call 707-826-2359.
Also on Saturday, the Redwood Region Audubon Society will present a free guided field trip from 8:30 to 11 a.m. at the same sanctuary.
Attendees should bring binoculars and meet trip leader Chet Ogan at the end of South I Street, near Klopp Lake in Arcata. The walk offers easy-to-navigate trails and stunning views of Humboldt Bay, along with a wide variety of birdlife.
On Sunday, the Audubon Society will offer another free guided birding tour along the Eureka Waterfront Trail from 9 to 11 a.m., led by Ralph Bucher. This urban trail, which is flat and wheelchair accessible, provides opportunities to see cormorants, loons, grebes, and even otters.
Participants will gather at the foot of Del Norte Street.
Additional community events in the area include a weekly dance at the Moose Lodge in Eureka, located at 4328 Campton Road, every Monday from 7 to 9:30 p.m., featuring live music. Bingo is held every Tuesday at the same lodge, with doors opening at 5 p.m., early bird games at 6 p.m., and regular games starting at 6:30 p.m.
All bingo proceeds support the local community. Humboldt County WIC will also celebrate World Breastfeeding Week with a 'Latch On Event' on August 1 from noon to 1 p.m.
at the Arcata Plaza Farmers Market, on the Children's Lawn. Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets and their babies.
