Young California Condor Makes History With First Oregon Flight in More Than 120 Years

02 June 2026 12:15

A two-year-old California condor named B9 has made history by becoming the first free-flying condor to enter Oregon in over 120 years. - B9, hatched April 3, 2024, flew roughly 380 miles round trip from Orick, California, to near Medford, Oregon, between May 12 and May 16, 2026.

- The flight expanded the Northern California Condor Restoration Program (NCCRP) flock's range by 25 miles north and 35 miles east. - The last wild condor in Oregon was seen in 1904 in Drain, Oregon.

- This is the NCCRP's second major milestone in 2026, following the first nest and egg laid earlier this year. Conservationists believe B9's journey was an exploratory flight and expect her to explore further, possibly leading other condors.
